Owner of Corduroy Restaurant Enters Into Agreement to Purchase Mood Lounge Building

Tom Power, owner of Corduroy restaurant at 1122 9th Street, NW, has entered into an agreement to purchase the building that houses Mood Lounge.  The agreement is contingent on Power receiving financing, and the agreement may be terminated if the closing doesn't occur before March 31, 2012.  The agreement is also subject to the approval of a bankruptcy court.  (As previously reported on this blog, the owner of the Mood Lounge building filed a bankruptcy petition with the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of Columbia.)

This is likely to be welcome news to the neighbors of Mood Lounge, which has been the subject of a number of complaints and proceedings before the Alcoholic Beverage Control Board — although it is not clear what Power's plans are for the Mood Lounge building, should he be successful in his effort to purchase it.

In a review by Washingtonian magazine, Corduroy was called "one of the hidden gems of Washington dining", and the restaurant has been on Washingtonian's list of the 100 Very Best Restaurants for three years in a row.  It's also been reported that Power plans to open a second restaurant on 9th Street, adjacent to Corduroy.

  1. Can see Corduroy moving to Mood space - it is a much better location considering the construction planned for next year of the 2 new Marriott's, and all the disruption that will happen along that block of Ninth Street

  2. It had been reported some time ago that he was going to open up a second restaurant with a more casual dining experience in the building next to Corduroy, called Velour (?). This Mood Lounge purchase could be in addition to or instead of that space. I don't think Corduroy would move. This is super terrific news even if it is not yet formal.

  3. No, Corduroy shouldn't move - the restaurant is beautiful! But it would be great to have the building owned by Tom Power and something better in there! I don't think the current occupants have a lease.

  4. When the Mood Lounge is out of here many politicians will try to take credit, and this has nothing to do with the politicians or with ABRA, the Mood Lounge will go down because of the neighbors and the small business owners, in spite of the political blabber.

I refer you to the lyrics by Jack Bruce and Pete Brown. That Clapton is God also helped to convey the message.
